Salento Ionian Side Whispered Legends The Prehistoric Heritage of Porto Badisco and Grotta dei Cervi Aeneas's landing in Virgil's Aeneid is traditionally associated with Porto Badisco, a little Adriatic inlet. One of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe is the nearby Grotta dei Cervi, which was found in 1970 and contains more than 3,000 Neolithic paintings of deer, hunters, and symbols. Although the cave is closed for preservation, guided tours and reconstructions are available at nearby centres. They have influenced the town's spa tradition from the 16th century, as seen by Belle Époque and Moorish-style structures. Views of the limestone cliffs and thermal treatments are the main draws for tourists nowadays. Castro, ancient Bones and Cavernous Identities Castro's mediaeval town is perched on a natural point with a view of the Adriatic. Geological structures and archaeological discoveries, such as prehistoric artefacts and tools, make the neighbouring Grotta Zinzulusa and Grotta Romanelli noteworthy.
