If you’re driving down from Austria or Switzerland, looking for an authentic Italian coastal escape without the tourist madness, Conero is your answer. Picture turquoise waters lapping against dramatic white cliffs, charming seaside villages where time moves slower, and evenings filled with fresh seafood and local wine. This is the Adriatic coast at its best—and still a well-kept secret compared to Italy’s more famous beach destinations.

Portonovo – A Wild Beach Haven

Portonovo is a mix of rugged beauty and simple pleasures. The beaches here are pristine, with Mezzavalle Beach offering a secluded stretch of coastline that you can only reach via a steep trail or by boat. It’s worth the effort—no beach clubs, just crystal-clear water and a quiet shoreline. For a slightly easier-to-reach option, La Vela Beach is famous for its striking white rock formation rising from the sea. Whether you spend the day sunbathing, kayaking, or indulging in a seafood feast at Il Clandestino, a rustic beach shack serving fresh fish, Portonovo is about soaking in nature without distractions.

Sirolo – A Village With a View

Sirolo is the kind of place that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Perched on a hill, this medieval village offers panoramic views of the Adriatic that will leave you speechless. Grab a seat at Ristorante da Silvio for a lunch while watching the sun dip below the horizon.

The beaches here are some of the most stunning on the Conero coast. San Michele Beach is a blend of soft pebbles and dramatic cliffs, while Sassi Neri Beach is wilder, with deep blue waters perfect for snorkeling. The most famous, however, is Due Sorelle Beach, named after two striking rock formations in the water. It’s accessible only by boat, making it feel like an exclusive little paradise.

Numana – Laid-Back Coastal Charm

Numana has two personalities: Numana Alta, with its tranquil coves and panoramic cliffs, and Numana Bassa, where beach clubs line the shore. If you’re looking for a mix of relaxation and convenience, this is the place.

The town itself is lovely for a post-beach stroll. Walk down the "Costarella," a historic stepped alleyway once used by fishermen, and soak in the pastel-colored houses. Then, stop for dinner at Pescheria Ricci, where you can taste fresh Adriatic seafood.

For those who enjoy active holidays, Numana offers plenty of options. You can rent a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard to explore the coastline from the water, spotting hidden caves and secluded beaches. If hiking is more your style, take one of the scenic trails leading to panoramic viewpoints over the Adriatic. In the evenings, the town’s lively piazza fills with visitors enjoying live music, artisanal gelato, and a relaxed, seaside atmosphere.

Numana is also a great base for exploring the Conero region. From here, you can easily take a boat tour to Due Sorelle Beach or drive a few minutes inland to discover the rolling vineyards and charming villages of the Marche countryside. Whether you're looking for a lazy beach day or an active adventure, Numana strikes the perfect balance between both.

Civitanova Marche – Evenings of Music & Seaside Strolls

If you love a mix of old-world charm and a lively atmosphere, Civitanova Marche is where you want to be when the sun sets. The town blends an elegant historic center with a vibrant waterfront filled with restaurants, beach bars, and live music venues.

Start your evening at Officina Bistrot, a cozy bar for a gourmet aperitif. Then, take a sunset walk along the promenade before heading to Trattoria Lo Monte. If you're into nightlife, Civitanova has several beach clubs where DJs keep the music going until late.

Senigallia – The Velvet Beach & Summer Vibes

Senigallia is famous for its Spiaggia di Velluto (Velvet Beach), a long stretch of fine golden sand perfect for families, couples, and anyone looking for a relaxing seaside escape. The shallow waters make it ideal for a refreshing swim, while the elegant Rotonda a Mare, a historic pier, offers a stunning backdrop for an evening stroll.

Beyond the beach, Senigallia has a vibrant cultural scene, especially in the summer when it hosts the Summer Jamboree, one of Europe’s biggest rock 'n' roll and swing festivals. If you’re visiting in early August, expect lively streets, vintage cars, and outdoor concerts filling the air with 1950s vibes.

For a taste of local cuisine, stop at Uliassi, a Michelin-starred restaurant that serves creative seafood dishes with an unbeatable sea view. More casual options include the beachfront trattorias along the lungomare, where you can enjoy fresh Adriatic fish paired with a crisp Verdicchio wine. If you’re looking for a relaxed yet high-quality dining experience, try Mascalzone Chalet Senigallia, a fantastic beachside restaurant known for its delicious seafood, cozy atmosphere, and stunning sea views.

Driving Tips & Best Time to Visit

Coming from Austria or Switzerland, the drive to Conero is straightforward. If you’re starting from Vienna, expect around 8 hours of driving. From Zurich, it takes about 7.5 hours. The best months to visit? May to mid-July and September to mid-October when the weather is perfect, and the crowds are manageable.

Once you’re in the area, distances between villages are short. Driving from Portonovo to Sirolo takes just 15 minutes, while reaching Numana from Sirolo is only a 5-minute drive. Parking can be tricky in summer, so look for designated parking areas outside the villages and use local shuttles to reach the beaches.

The Conero coast is a refreshing alternative to Italy’s more crowded summer destinations. Whether you're relaxing on wild beaches, sipping wine in a hilltop village, or enjoying fresh seafood by the sea, this is a road trip that combines adventure with pure Italian bliss. Pack your bags, start the engine, and get ready to experience the Adriatic the way it was meant to be.
