For the slow traveler, this walled city in the Venetian hills offers an unparalleled moment of discovery: the chess game Marostica (nobil ziogo de li scacchi), a spectacular ritual where history is still lived and celebrated at its best. This biennial festival is more than just a celebration; it is a thoroughly crafted dramatic event rooted in the civic and romantic code of the 15th century.
The Story of Italy's Most Beautiful Chess Game
The foundation of this unique spectacle dates back to the Republic of Venice's dominion. In 1454, the city's Governor, Taddeo Parisio, found his daughter, Lionora, the object of affection for two noblemen, Rinaldo d'Angarano and Vieri da Vallanora. To prevent the loss of two valuable knights, Parisio rejected the traditional duel. Instead, he decreed the rivals must settle the matter with a historical event: a game of chess played with living pieces on the town square. The winner would marry Lionora; the loser would marry her younger sister, Oldrada.

While the original moves of this fabled match have been lost to time, the romance and political pragmatism of the decision, and the fact that commands are still issued in the historic Venetian dialect, ensure that the event is a potent encapsulation of a hidden Italy tradition, initially revived by Francesco Pozza in 1923 and formalized in the 1954 theatrical libretto by Mario Mirko Vucetich.
The Mechanics of the Modern Spectacle and Booking Details
Today, the performance is a triumph of theatrical precision, involving over 650 costumed citizens, horses, and performers. The stage is the massive, 16-meter-square chessboard in Piazza Castello, paved with pink Conco marble and Asiago biancone. The two-hour performance is a fully realized theatrical production, featuring flag-wavers (sbandieratori), court dancers, fire-eaters, and soldiers. The pieces themselves, the Kings, Queens, Knights (mounted on real horses), and Pawns, move with majestic gravity, following one of history's most celebrated chess matches, concluding with a dramatic "castle burning" and fireworks.

The next edition of this monumental live chess performance is scheduled for 2026 on the evenings of September 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th, starting at 9:00 PM. Seating is in grandstands surrounding the square, with ticket prices going up to €80for first-row seats. Given its popularity, pre-sale booking is essential. Tickets and updated information are made available on the official website, typically several months in advance.
The Marostica Human Chess Game is more than a cultural curiosity; it is a deeply felt ritual and passion, passed downfrom one generation to another, evoking values and old customs with a spectacular show made of traditions and history.
