In the sun-drenched plains and gentle hills of Apulia (Puglia, in italian), Salento is a place where torquise waters, limestone cliffs, and olive trees allow time to pass. This is a place of daily rituals, not crowded monuments: elderly enjoying coffee "sotto i portici" (under the arcades) , fishermen straining nets at daybreak, and the sea carrying tales from beyond the horizon. This plan embraces unhurried travel, a graceful cadence that allows Salento's picturesque coastline and evocative villages to reveal themselves one scene at a time.

Oasi WWF Le Cesine: The Calm Elegance of a Wetland

Start in the Oasi Le Cesine, a peaceful haven only a short distance from the sea, where marsh grasses sway and migratory birds circle overhead. The air is fragrant and humid here, and you can feel the cycle of nature in every breath.

Sun-kissed Peace on the Adriatic: San Foca

Fishermen's boats gently rock in turquoise bays in San Foca, a bit further north. At this point, life slows to the tide's pace and your voyage begins with the taste of salt and sun.

Myth and Blue Depths at Roca Vecchia and Grotta Della Poesia

Cliff pathways take you to the charming Grotta Della Poesia and Roca Vecchia a few km to the south. According to legend, poets spoke their poetry into these naturally carved limestone chambers, which are today teeming with vivid cerulean pools, a living poem preserved in stone.

Between Two Seas: Torre dell’Orso and Otranto’s Living History

A Natural Embrace: Torre dell'Orso and the Two Sisters

Torre dell'Orso opens up like an open palm as you continue southward: white sand borders clear waters, surrounded by the "Two Sisters" rock formations that keep watch just offshore. It's a natural hug that invites you to stop, look, and wade.

The Tapestry of Otranto: Castle, Cathedral, and Hidden Lagoons

Next up is Otranto, a city with multiple storylines. One of Italy's most impressive Romanesque masterpieces is found in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata. It is a huge mosaic floor from the 12th century created by the monk Pantaleone, where the Tree of Life unfolds between biblical themes, mythical creatures, and mediaeval allegories. Rebuilt in the late 15th century to bolster coastal defences, the Aragonese Castle remains steadfast in the face of the raging Adriatic. Beyond the town's defences, the serene Limini Lakes, the remote Bay of Orte, and the bizarre rust-red cliffs of the bauxite quarry all beckon peaceful hours of exploration away from the bustle of the city.

Salento Ionian Side Whispered Legends

The Prehistoric Heritage of Porto Badisco and Grotta dei Cervi

Aeneas's landing in Virgil's Aeneid is traditionally associated with Porto Badisco, a little Adriatic inlet. One of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe is the nearby Grotta dei Cervi, which was found in 1970 and contains more than 3,000 Neolithic paintings of deer, hunters, and symbols. Although the cave is closed for preservation, guided tours and reconstructions are available at nearby centres.

Santa Cesarea Terme: Adriatic Thermal Springs

Santa Cesarea Terme is well-known for its sulfur-rich springs that emerge at about 30°C from coastal caverns. They have influenced the town's spa tradition from the 16th century, as seen by Belle Époque and Moorish-style structures. Views of the limestone cliffs and thermal treatments are the main draws for tourists nowadays.

Castro, ancient Bones and Cavernous Identities

Castro's mediaeval town is perched on a natural point with a view of the Adriatic. Geological structures and archaeological discoveries, such as prehistoric artefacts and tools, make the neighbouring Grotta Zinzulusa and Grotta Romanelli noteworthy. Here, you can feel the line between history and the hollow scream of caves being eroded by millennia of erosion, salt and folklore in their shadows.

Santa Maria di Leuca: Where the Seas Meet and Devotion Rises

The Adriatic and Ionian merge beneath the Punta Meliso lighthouse near the southern edge of Italy, where Santa Maria di Leuca is revealed. The historical "end of the land" is marked by the Basilica of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae. Sea caverns on both sides are visited via boat cruises.
