There’s something about Sicily that makes time slow down. Maybe it’s the golden haze that drapes the island at dusk, or the centuries-old olive trees twisting out of dry earth. But if you’re lucky enough to be in Sicily between April and December, it’s the sagre—the rural festivals—that’ll show you the island’s real tempo.

Forget the big city itineraries and rushed photo ops. This guide is your seasonal passport to authentic Sicily, one small town at a time. We’re mapping out festivals where you’ll share ricotta still warm from the pot, swirl local wine under summer stars, and dance in cobbled piazzas to music you’ve never heard before. Whether you’re flying in from the UK or USA, consider this your slow-travel manual to experiencing Sicily’s vibrant traditions through its most flavorful celebrations.

April – Sagra del Carciofo (Artichoke Festival), Ramacca

Ramacca kicks off spring with its annual ode to the globe artichoke. Expect the town square to turn into an open-air trattoria over two weekends: April 4–6 and 11–13, 2025.

Grilled artichokes dripping with oil, lasagna layered with the local harvest, and even artichoke desserts fill the stalls. Folk bands pass through the streets, farmers explain what makes their soil special, and locals gather in cheerful droves. If you’re chasing seasonal flavor, start here.

May – Sagra della Ricotta e del Cannolo, Mussomeli

This creamy celebration lands on the weekend of May 3rd and 4th, 2025. Mussomeli is about 40 minutes from Racalmuto—an easy drive from Terre di Zaccanello. Check the accomodation below:

Sicilian cannoli with ricotta

Cheesemakers ladle fresh ricotta into woven baskets while lines form for cannoli filled on the spot. You’ll find more than just sweets: think ricotta-stuffed pasta, warm focaccia, and savory tuma, served straight from the hands of those who made them. The air smells like wood-fired bread and citrus zest, and conversations ripple through the square in dialect. It’s not polished or pretentious—it’s food with soul, made with pride, and shared in the middle of a lively Sicilian piazza where everyone feels like a guest of honor.

June – Sagra della Ciliegia, Graniti

June means cherry season, and Graniti celebrates it with a festival that brings together growers, bakers, and curious eaters. The 2025 edition is set for June 7th and 8th—a weekend of ripe fruit, jam-filled pastries, and fresh air in the Sicilian hills.

There are live music sets, cooking demonstrations, and stands selling cherry tarts and juice. Farmers offer tastings of rare varieties, and kids get cherry-themed games and crafts. It’s all about the fruit—but it’s also about being there when summer just starts to heat up.

July – Bagli, Olio e Mare, San Vito Lo Capo

From July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, San Vito Lo Capo invites visitors to explore its coastal flavors with Bagli, Olio e Mare. It’s a long weekend of open-air cooking, tastings, and cultural storytelling that weaves together extra virgin olive oil, fresh seafood, and Sicilian culinary heritage.

The event takes place inside traditional stone courtyards—the 'bagli'—where chefs and locals collaborate on a lineup that blends cooking demonstrations with hands-on workshops. Pair a grilled fish dish with local white wine, catch a sunset concert, and join an evening walk through food history. This is coastal Sicily at its most flavorful and welcoming.

August – Sagra della Busiata, Salemi

From August 12th to 14th, 2025, Salemi becomes a pasta lover’s haven during the Sagra della Busiata. You’ll know you’re close when you smell tomato sauce thick with garlic curling through the air.

This three-day celebration focuses on busiata—a coiled pasta hand-rolled on thin wooden sticks and served with ragù, trapanese pesto, or seafood. The festival is a mix of open-air dining, local wine, and folk music echoing through narrow streets. It’s a community table, and everyone’s invited.

September – Fastuca Fest (Pistachio Festival), Raffadali

Raffadali puts pistachios on a pedestal during Fastuca Fest, usually held around September 5th to 7th (dates for 2025 to be confirmed). It’s one of Sicily’s most beloved food festivals, and conveniently close to Racalmuto—perfect for a weekend based at Terre di Zaccanello.

Expect endless variations of Sicily’s “green gold”: creamy gelato, savory sauces, pastries stuffed with sweetened pistachio paste. Live cooking demos, parades, and artisan stalls round out the experience. It’s festive, flavorful, and thoroughly local.

October – Ottobrata Zafferanese, Zafferana Etnea

Every Sunday in October, Zafferana Etnea throws a new party. This month-long series of food fairs celebrates Mount Etna’s autumn harvest.

Expect mushrooms, honey, roasted chestnuts, and local wine. Artisans and street performers line the alleys. It’s the kind of weekend that works whether you’re with kids, traveling solo, or hunting for souvenirs that don’t feel like souvenirs.

November – Sagra della Cassatella, Agira

Mid-November brings the cassatella into the spotlight in Agira. The pastry—filled with almond or chickpea paste and dusted with sugar—tells a story as old as Sicily’s culinary mix of Arab and Mediterranean flavors.

It’s a bite of history with powdered sugar on top. Expect talks on local traditions, music performances, and plenty of pastry sampling. No reservation needed. Just show up hungry.

December – ChocoModica, Modica

Modica does chocolate differently. Its technique dates back to the Spanish conquistadors, and its flavor is all about texture—grainy, dark, intense. During ChocoModica, the town celebrates it with flair.

From December 6–8, the streets are lined with tastings, demos, and stalls from some of Italy’s best artisans. The Baroque city backdrop makes it feel like walking through a dessert cookbook. Try the chili-spiked bars and don’t skip the cannella.

How to Get Here if You’re Flying from the USA or UK

Fly into Palermo (PMO) or Catania (CTA)—both serve as solid gateways. From the UK, direct flights run seasonally from London and other major cities. From the US, fly into Rome or Milan and transfer from there. Flights from Rome to Sicily usually take about 1 hour and 15 minutes, while those from Milan are just under 2 hours. Once you land, renting a car is the best way to connect the dots between villages and festivals. Sicily’s most charming corners aren’t always on the train map.

Sicily’s sagre aren’t just events. They’re how towns tell their stories—through food, music, and people. You’ll leave with a suitcase full of local goods, a camera roll packed with village charm, and a taste memory that lingers. Plan ahead. Travel slow. And arrive hungry.
